Everything you want to know about stainless steel passivation.

PASSIVATION FAQ

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why is my stainless steel rusting?

Despite its name, stainless steel is not completely immune to rust. Corrosion can occur when the surface becomes contaminated by iron particles, exposed to chlorides, damaged during welding, or improperly cleaned.

Common causes include:

  • Contact with carbon steel tools or particles
  • Welding heat tint and surface contamination
  • Saltwater or chloride exposure
  • Inadequate passivation
  • Poor maintenance or harsh environments

Proper cleaning, pickling, and passivation help restore the protective chromium oxide layer that gives stainless steel its corrosion resistance.

What are the main advantages of the no-rinse kit?

No use of water and no liquid discharge. Significant cost reduction through elimination of effluent management and reduction of shutdowns. Solution suitable for constrained environments such as the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman, Kuwait and remote industrial sites. Simple and quick application, suitable for vertical surfaces and localized interventions.

How to Choose the Right Treatment for Stainless Steel?

✔ Welds and vertical surfaces → Gel or sprayable gel
✔ Tanks and internal piping systems → Liquid circulation or immersion process
✔ No access to water → Rinse-free process
✔ Visible oxidation → Pickling followed by passivation
✔ Already clean surface → Passivation only

When Is stainless steel Passivation Recommended?

Passivation is particularly recommended after welding work, pickling, sandblasting, bending, grinding, polishing, as well as after machining or metalworking operations.

It is also recommended for food-grade, pharmaceutical, and medical equipment, for oxygen service systems, and for installations exposed to corrosive environments.

What Is the Difference Between Pickling and Passivation for stainless steel?

Pickling is primarily used to remove contaminants, oxides, weld discoloration, and other impurities present on the surface of stainless steel. It deeply cleans the surface and prepares the metal for subsequent treatment steps. This is a more aggressive process that removes a thin surface layer in order to restore a clean and uniform finish.

Passivation, on the other hand, is performed to enhance the natural corrosion resistance of stainless steel. This treatment promotes the formation of a protective passive layer that stabilizes the surface and improves its resistance to corrosion. Unlike pickling, passivation is a gentler process focused mainly on protecting the metal rather than removing material.

In most cases, passivation is carried out after pickling to optimize the protection and durability of stainless steel.

What stainless steel passivation methods does Group Kemplus offer?

Kemplus offers a complete range of industrial stainless steel passivation solutions, suitable for all configurations.

1. Passivation Gels (Vertical Surfaces) - Formulated to adhere to vertical surfaces without running. Ideal for stainless steel tanks, welded structures, installed equipment and localized interventions.

2. Sprayable gels - Uniform application on large surfaces or complex geometries.

3. Soaking liquids - For removable parts and workshop processing.

4. Circulation passivation solutions (CIP) - For pipes, closed systems and industrial networks.

5. Rinse-free passivation kit - Solution allowing passivation without water and without generation of liquid effluents.

What Is a Stainless Steel Pickling Liquid?

A stainless steel pickling liquid is a chemical solution designed to remove:

  • weld oxides,
  • heat tint,
  • ferrous contamination,
  • and surface scale formed during welding or fabrication.

Unlike pickling gels, liquid pickling solutions can easily treat:

  • piping systems,
  • tanks,
  • heat exchangers,
  • internal surfaces,
  • and complex welded assemblies.

Pickling liquids are especially suitable for industrial processes requiring uniform or large-scale treatment.

Pickling Liquid vs Pickling Gel for Stainless Steel: Which Should You Use?

When treating stainless steel after welding, choosing between a pickling liquid and a pickling gel depends mainly on the application method, part geometry, and manufacturing process.

Pickling gels are commonly used for localized applications, while stainless steel pickling liquids are generally preferred for immersion pickling, circulation systems, and pickling baths.
