Our regular passivation kit: the ultimate rust remover!
Next, spray KPCLEAN, a pH-neutral degreaser, on the entire surface, letting it rest for 10 minutes. Thoroughly rinse with water and allow to dry before moving on to the next step.
Apply a thick, uniform layer of KPNOX18 pickling gel onto unbrushed welds using a non-metallic brush. Allow the product to rest for 30 to 45 minutes before rinsing thoroughly with water. Let the surface dry completely.
Apply KPNOX11 gel (1 L per 1 m2) using a non-metallic brush or a stainless steel spray gun. Let the product rest for 30 minutes before rinsing the surface with a high-pressure water spray and allowing it to dry.
Lastly, perform a Ferroxyl test to detect the presence of iron residues. If the test is positive for contaminants, repeat the passivation step. If it is negative, simply clean the surface with 95% ethanol or deionized water.

Begin by gently rubbing the surface with KPNOX T21 pads (1 pad per 30–45 ft2) using a circular motion for at least 3 minutes. Let the surface dry completely.
Next, scrub the surface with KPNOX T22 pads (1 pads per 15–30 ft2) using a circular motion for at least 5 minutes or until the rust has disappeared. Let the surface dry completely.
To neutralize, scrub the entire surface with KPNOX T23 pads (1 pad per 50–75 ft2) using a circular motion for at least 3 minutes before letting it dry.
Lastly, scrub the entire surface with KPNOX T24 pads until a white rag comes away clean; this means the surface is free of contaminants.
Everything you need to know about stainless steel passivation
As you know, stainless steel is used to manufacture various equipment thanks, in part, to its superior corrosion resistance and ability to form a self-healing protective layer. Certain factors, however, can weaken this layer. This is where passivation comes into play.
This process consists of treating metal with specific acids to eliminate all traces of free iron from the surface and cover it with a layer of anticorrosive oxide. Since this passive layer can become damaged over time, it is important to perform a passivation treatment regularly to prevent rust formation and premature wear.

An overview of ASTM A380 and ASTM A967 standards
ASTM standards are used throughout the world and often given force of law by government regulators. At Kemplus, we are proud to comply with two of those standards: ASTM A380, which defines the standard practice for the passivation of stainless steel parts, and ASTM A967, which covers the standard specification of various passivation treatments while proposing validation tests.
